Weird vocabulary

I am never be somebody who is fluent with language (not anywhere even near to be linguistic gifted).   Eventough I have been speaking english for 10 years at work, only when I moved to Perth that my english vocabulary got a bit normal and what you'd call casual. Before that I only spoke using mot of textbook english and refer to most written english ( as I used english mostly for emails and chatting).

That also happen when I moved to Mexico and had to learn basic Spanish. After 6 weeks intensive course, my vocabulary evolved to be around the oilfield world i.e.: the words and topics which I used and heard everyday, so I became familiar and can understand if it is about "choke the well", "inject some gas", "the blockage in the pump" etc. when I visited the local planetarium and join the small explanation about the solar system I couldn't understand, to make it worse: I seemed couldn't catch any Spanish words at all.

So it also happen everytime I went back to Indonesia, my choice of words and fluency got very strange.

Here, back in Brisbane, my only constant partner in conversing is my husband.

One morning in the shop where I work as volunteer, one girl and I was discussing hr top. She wore a white top with some pattern and beads on the chest part. She said eventough the top looks like granny top but she likes it, I responded " no way it is a granny top, it looks nice and I especially like those ...um....special effect?" Pointing to the pattern.

Well, at least, she still understand what I mean by that:)
